We had an excellent Convention planned for you this year. The speakers were going to be amazing. Our entertainment was going to be “otherworldly.” The venue was top notch. A first for our Association, escaping the oppressive summer heat by moving to the cool pines of Flagstaff.
Then, along came Covid…
We looked at many ideas: having the convention stand as is, doing podcasts, Zoom sessions, and the like. We decided, it just wouldn’t be the same. While the education sessions are important, networking with the top people in the industry is equal to or even more important. And that just doesn’t happen with “Zoom.”
Then came the numbers. What is the impact to the Association if we cancel? After all, this is our annual fundraiser for our lobbyist.
We looked at our balance sheet. Thankfully, over the years, we have closely monitored and managed our expenses. We are in the great position to have an overage in our operating account. We are still able to pay our Lobbyist, maintain our existing commitments and have money in reserve, though the reserve would decrease. So the only question became our commitment to the Convention venue.
We have been working closely with the Little America Hotel and Resort in Flagstaff. They were prepared for this eventuality as people are cancelling conventions all across the world. We were able to renegotiate the contract for 2021 at the same Resort, which is the best outcome for the Association. Keeping our members’ safety in mind, the decision became a “no-brainer.”
Thus, we have cancelled the 2020 Convention and have agreed to re-convene it at the same location on August 25-27, 2021.
We, the Board and Convention Committee, were very excited about this Convention. It was going to be different, but better than previous Conventions. And I think you all know, when considering conventions, we set the “bar” pretty high. Please join us in safely convening in August 2021 for the convention.
